Hermione Chapter #11 was chartered on April 26, 1934, in Washington, D.C. with 16 founding members and is one of the oldest active Daughters of Penelope chapters in the United States.  Throughout Hermione Chapter’s 88 years, its philanthropic initiatives have benefited numerous charities in the U.S. and abroad.  The Chapter’s social, cultural, and fundraising activities have strengthened the bonds of sisterhood among its members and those in other chapters, as well as across generations, with many mothers and daughters joining together as Sisters in Theta Pi.

 

In addition to supporting Daughters of Penelope national and district-level projects, Hermione Chapter’s efforts have benefited organizations including St. Jude’s Research Hospital, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Rainbow Place Women’s Shelter, Holy Protection Monastery, National Center for Children & Families, Greek Fire Relief, Toys for Tots, Operation Gratitude, Shady Grove Pregnancy Center, American University Campus Ministry, and The Washington-Area AHEPA Scholarship Awards, to name just a few.

 

Chapter fundraising activities include an annual “Bakeless” bake sale, Bingo events, and raffles.  Hermione Chapter members have dedicated their talents in knitting, crocheting, jewelry-making, and other creative endeavors to support the Chapter’s efforts through the donation of items and proceeds from sales.

 

Along with Brothers from AHEPA, Hermione Chapter members visit Arlington National Cemetery every Memorial Day weekend to places roses on the graves of Greek-Americans.   Chapter members also march in Baltimore’s annual Greek Independence Day Parade.  Social events include trips to places of interest in the Washington, D.C. area and other states, hosting Founders’ Day and Christmas luncheons, book signings, lectures, and attending events hosted by other area chapters.

 

Hermione Chapters members have a long history of dedicated service to the Daughters of Penelope organization, serving in various national and district-level positions over the years.  In October 2022, Hermione Chapter reinstated Maids of Athena Muses Chapter #22, thus ensuring that the work of the chapter and the Daughters of Penelope continues.
